What is river terraces?

River terraces are flat or gently sloping surfaces that are located along the banks of rivers. They are formed by the deposition of sediments that have been eroded and transported by water over time.

River terraces are commonly found in areas where rivers have been flowing for a long time and have cut into the surrounding landscape, creating a steep-sided channel. The sediments deposited by the river form a terrace above the channel, which may be several meters high.

River terraces can provide important information about the history of a river and its surrounding landscape. The layers of sediment in a river terrace can reveal changes in the river's flow over time, as well as the types of rocks and soils that were eroded and deposited.

They can also provide valuable habitats for wildlife and can be used for agriculture and other human activities. However, river terraces can also be vulnerable to erosion and flooding, which can cause damage to structures and infrastructure located on or near them.
